The Colonnade: Downhome Southern Cuisine Served in Atlanta

The Colonnade Atlanta is located on the northern tip of Morningside-Lenox Park, south of Lindridge-Martin Manor and west of Woodland Hills, at 1879 Cheshire Bridge Rd. NE, Atlanta, GA 30324.

Here, you and your guests can treat yourselves to Southern delights in a laid-back, unfussy environment that has been home to some of Atlanta’s best cooking since 1927. Just remember to bring your cash, as The Colonnade is an old-school cash-only restaurant!

Start off with an appetizer like the soup du jour or a plate of chicken livers. Classic Colonnade specialties include chicken fried steak, slow roasted pork loin, salmon croquettes, pot roast, chopped sirloin steak, North Georgia rainbow trout, grilled calf’s liver, black and blue ribeye, fried catfish, Lowcountry style shrimp and grits, bourbon and brown sugar glazed pork tenderloin, and Creole trout almandine.

The restaurant prides itself on its homemade sauces, dressings, yeast rolls, and pies. For the ultimate finish, treat yourself to one of The Colonnade’s amazing desserts, from strawberry shortcake and hot fudge cake to all manner of pies, including coconut iced box pie, key lime pie, apple pie, and Georgia peach cobbler, in slice or whole pie form.

Take a Walk in the Garden

Why not stretch your legs after your visit to Colonnade? You’ll need to walk off all that delicious fried fare anyway! The Atlanta Botanical Garden is nearby, and it boasts a wonderful wealth of lively living attractions.

Stop by the Cascades Garden, and relax near the flowing water, admiring Earth Goddess, one of the garden’s iconic living sculptures. Let little ones run free at the Lou Glenn Children’s Garden, which is full of fun ways for them to explore plants and science (while getting a bit wet and dirty!). Or wander through the Tropical Rotunda, a glorious exploration of the world’s most diverse climate type, filled with lush ferns, cycads, and a cacophony of tropical birds and frogs that inhabit the space.

True plant aficionados will cherish a visit to the Fuqua Orchid Center, where a large and diverse collection is on display year-round in this 16,000-foot habitat. The Atlanta Botanical Garden also has a strong focus on conservation and research; visit the fascinating bog habitat of the Conservation Garden to view their incredible collection of carnivorous plants and learn about efforts to preserve this unique ecosystem.

The Atlanta Botanical Garden is open Tuesdays through Sundays, and there’s always something new happening, so check out their website.

Visit the Art Museum

When you arrive at The High Museum of Art, you’ll first be amazed by the building itself. This stunning, porcelain-enameled building boasts a four-story glass atrium, and contains over 11,000 pieces of American, African, and European art, as well as decorative art and photography. Atlanta’s premier museum also showcases a wide variety of rotating and traveling exhibitions, so there’s always something new to see, even if you’ve been here before.

While other large metropolitan museums mostly focus on the works of white European men, The High has a refreshing diversity in its collection. You’ll find a great selection of work by self-taught African American artists, as well as a highlighting of work by women. Another thing that sets The High apart: they don’t mind if you take photographs, as long as you don’t use a flash. So, go ahead and create your own works of art while you’re there! Be sure to stop by the gift shop as well and get yourself some unique artisan souvenirs.

The High offers a variety of special events on a regular basis, so be sure to check out their website and see what’s coming up on the calendar. Look for events like concerts, kids’ art sessions, and a series called “Conversation Pieces” where you can have in-depth discussions about individual pieces of art with museum curators. It’s definitely a great way to spend an afternoon in Atlanta!
