Admire the details in Giovanni Bellini’s Madonna and Child, infer the emotions behind a contemporary abstract piece, or help your toddler complete her own painting. Whether you’re looking to admire well-known artworks or engage in a hands-on family experience, The High Museum of Art is a top destination for art connoisseurs.
The Collection
The High’s permanent collection houses over 17,000 objects focusing on seven key collecting areas: Photography, Decorative Arts & Design, African Art, European Art, American Art, Modern & Contemporary Art, and Folk & Self-Taught Art. The Photography collection houses over 7,000 prints, with many regionally relevant photos related to the American South. Reflect on significant events in our country’s history through photographs documenting the civil rights movement, of which The High Museum has one of the largest collections. In Decorative Arts & Design, more than 2,300 objects dating from 1640 to the present represent the beauty of simple objects to the ornate. The European Art collection will expose you to works by renowned artists such as Claude Monet, Camille Pissarro, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Edgar Degas, and Émile Bernard. The collection spans the 1300s through the 1900s and includes more than 900 paintings, sculptures, and works on paper. Then wander among sculptures and paintings by American artists, depicting portraitures and abstract paintings. Browse African Art pieces including masks, sculptures, textiles, beadwork, metalwork, and ceramics.
