A Grandiose Performance Venue Destination in Atlanta
Renowned for its extravagant and impressive architecture emulating Far Eastern architecture such as Spain’s Alhambra and Egypt’s Temple of Karnak, the Fox Theatre was first designed in 1928 as a home for the Shriner Organization’s Atlanta chapter. However, it was so extravagant that the Shriner Organization could no longer afford it and leased the auditorium to movie mogul William Fox, who developed Fox Theatre into a movie palace.
In 1929, the Fox Theatre Atlanta opened on Christmas Day and premiered its first movie to a sold-out crowd: Steamboat Willie, the first Mickey Mouse cartoon from Disney. When the Great Depression hit, Fox declared bankruptcy, but the Fox Theatre continued on as a movie theater, live performance venue, and dance hall.
Today, Fox Theatre serves as a historic performance venue. It spans 250,000 square feet and houses the world’s largest Moller pipe organ, with 3,622 pipes. In its entirety, the structure cost about $40 million in today’s dollars to construct.

Tours take place on Mondays, Thursdays, and Saturdays, with tickets for the tours offered on sale two weeks in advance. All visitors (including infants and children) must have a ticket in order to attend any tour or event held at Fox Theatre.
