Visited by over 100,000 visitors per year, the Michael C Carlos Museum is a haven for history buffs and art lovers. This gallery, originally known as the Emory University Museum, has grown to house the largest ancient art collections in the Southeast, including Egyptian, Near Eastern, Classical, ancient American, African, and Asian art, as well as significant works of art on paper from the Renaissance to the present. Enjoy permanent collections of sculptures, prints, and artifacts. There are also temporary exhibits that rotate continuously, keeping the interest high for return visitors. From cats in ancient Egypt to prints by Andy Warhol, there is something for a wide variety of interests on display.
The museum is one of the top museums in Atlanta not only for displaying invaluable historical artifacts, but also housing the Karen Mariea Madsen Parsons Conservation Laboratory, working to ensure the preservation of collections through both preventive care and treatment. Walk in the shoes of a conservator by completing a fun investigation on damage cause to the museum’s objects by past insect activity, working as both a conservator and an observer of art as you move through the museum.
Planning Your Excursion to the Michael C Museum
The Michael C Carlos Museum is located on the historic quadrangle of the Emory University campus at 571 South Kilgo Circle. They are open Tuesday through Friday 10am-4pm, Saturday 10am-5pm, and Sunday noon-5pm. Admission is $8 for adults, $6 for students, seniors, and children ages 6-17, and free for children 5 and under. An audio guide is available for an additional $2. For an in-depth tour with a knowledgeable guide, join one of the public tours available every Sunday at 2:00pm. Enjoy a coffee and pastry at the Ebrik Coffee Room after your tour.
