Behind the Music

With more than 300 performances per year, there are plenty of opportunities to enjoy the music presented by the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. The Atlanta Symphony Hall in the Woodruff Arts Center is the Orchestra’s main concert venue, but they can also be heard playing at Encore Park and Chastain Park. The Orchestra was founded in 1945 and is in the top 7 in the country by budget size. Their performances have been heard around the world with tours in Europe and several shows in Berlin, and have been awarded multiple Grammy awards. They are currently directed by Robert Spano and in the past have attracted well-known soloists such as Isaac Stern and Glenn Gould. The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Chorus performs regularly with the Orchestra and is made up of 200 vocalists.

Movies & Music

Especially popular are Movies in Concert, where you can watch well-known movies on a 40-foot screen while the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra plays the movie score live. This is a unique experience for both movie lovers and music lovers, bringing the film and music to life in a whole new way. Recent films played at Movies in Concert have included Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Love Actually, E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial, Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back, Jaws, and Casablanca.

Most concerts are 90 minutes to two hours long, with an intermission at the halfway point. There is no need to dress formally; most guests heading to the orchestra wear business or cocktail attire. For families with children, Family Concerts and Coca-Cola Holiday programs are child-friendly options.
